Al Zaytah area is noted for the rugged beauty of its ancient sandstones carved by time into fantastic landscapes

Wadi Al Zaytah

The photograph was taken on a stormy day with grey clouds in the sky and an overall overcast looking desert scene. The bottom of the picture shows the surface of the area and looks like desert sand but hard forming rounding shapes. On the left side of the photo is a sandstone hill made with many rounded pillars that are side-by-side to form the hill and are the color of sand. The pillars look like they were made layer by layer over a long period of time. In the background are several other sandstone hills.

Next stop, Jordan

From the bottom of the photograph is a double lane road leading away from you and into the distant mountains. The left side of the paved road is a darker gray than the right and the lanes are separated with a white line. Each side of the road has a yellow line marking the edge of the road. On each side of the road is reddish tan desert sand. In the middle upper right is a large mountain that is dark brown. The mountain appears to have been made in many layers and formed by large pillars that are stacked closely together. Behind the first mountain is a larger mountain that appears to have been made in the same way.

Wadi Rum

The rectangular photograph shows the richly colored mountains of Wadi Rum. The mountain on the far left is almost sand colored and the mountains seen beyond that are a deeper richer sand color. The mountains to the right are in the shadows and are a very deep color brown. There is a green tree, not an evergreen, on the bottom right. In center of the bottom is the top of a rock dome and is a very light tan. The area from the dome and through the center of the picture appears to be a valley.

Wadi Al Zaytah, Saudi Arabia is in the extreme NW corner of the country, near the Jordanian border. The area is filled with beautiful mountains of Paleozoic sandstones like those seen at Petra, Jordan. For more information: Wikipedia: Petra

Wadi Rum is located in Jordan and was described by T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) as "Vast, echoing and God-like", and acclaimed by many as one of the most stunning desertscapes in the world. Wadi Rum is where the desert scenes of the movie 'Lawrence of Arabia' were filmed and the movie remains one of the prime sources for Westerners of what the landscape of Saudi Arabia is like.

This is the exciting and highly literate story of the real Lawrence of Arabia, as written by Lawrence himself, who helped unify Arab factions against the occupying Turkish army, circa World War I. Lawrence has a novelist's eye for detail, a poet's command of the language, an adventurer's heart, a soldier's great story, and his memory and intellect are at least as good as all those. Lawrence describes the famous guerrilla raids, and train bombings you know from the movie, but also tells of the Arab people and politics with great penetration. Moreover, he is witty, always aware of the ethical tightrope that the English walked in the Middle East and always willing to include himself in his own withering insight.

Saudi Arabian Trivia

Lawrence himself had little wish to be remembered as a war hero: he could hardly bear to think about his wartime role. His enduring ambition was to be a writer. He once confessed his hope that, "in the distant future, if the distant future deigns to consider my insignificance, I shall be appraised rather as a man of letters than a man of action."
