Benefits of Fasting
Fasting is a way of learning to control your natural urges such as hunger and thirst. It is then easier for you to resist temptations for things which are not necessary, such as drugs or other unhealthy or harmful substances and behaviors.
Fasting is a way of experiencing hunger, developing sympathy for those less fortunate and learning thankfulness and appreciation for all of God's bounties.
Fasting is also beneficial to the health and provides a break in the cycle of rigid habits or overindulgence.

Fasting During Ramadan / Ramadhan
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset every day. This means not to eat, drink or smoke during the daylight hours. For married adults, it also includes refraining from marital relations during the hours of fasting (i.e. the daylight hours). The fasting person is expected to do his best to practice self control and discipline, not to anger easily, refrain from using harsh language or insults and to tolerate, forgive and respect others.
Young children, pregnant or nursing mothers, plus the old and sick are not expected to fast. Older people can feed a poor person for every day they cannot fast during Ramadan. Sick people can compensate by fasting other days when they feel well. Children are not permitted to fast until they are strong enough to physically tolerate fasting without difficulty.

The Importance of Ramadan
Ramadan is important for Muslims because it is believed to be the month during which the first verses of the Holy Quran was revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad.
The recitation began one night in the year 610 ad, when Muhammad was asleep; a voice from heaven called out to him with the command, "Recite! Recite! Recite!". The angel Gabriel recited three verses to him and when he awoke he had these verses, as he said, inscribed in his heart. From that point on, Muhammad believed himself to be a prophet and messenger of God, the last in a line of seven prophets (Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus) and responsible for inscribing the last and most important of God's direct messages to the world.
