Hair Styles of the Badawi and Wahhabi worn in 1853. The hair, exposed to the sun, wind and rain acquires a coarseness not usually seen today. The only cosmetic is clarified butter freely applied to the body as well as to the hair.

Impelled by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure and aided by an extraordinary facility in Eastern languages, Sir Richard Burton (1821 - 90) was one of the great traveler/explores of history. He was the first European to enter the capital of Somaliland and the first to discover the great lakes of Central Africa. But it is his pilgrimage in 1853 to Mecca and Al Madinah and the most sacrosanct shrines of Islam that Burton is best known and for the book that recorded his experiences the journey. He is still one of the very few non-Muslims to visit and return from Mecca.

Saudi Arabian Trivia

"Arabian Nights" was translated into English by Sir Richard Burton and are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: A thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever.
