The largest Camel Souq / Market in the Middle East is just a few miles outside Riyadh, the capitol of Saudi Arabia.

Camel Souq

Many camels are seen in the desert-like area. Some camels are standing and others are sitting down on all fours. Some of the one-hump camels are behind fences that are not sturdy and made with lumber perhaps 2 inches square and 3 feet high connect with 3 strands of wire in-between the posts. The camels are various shades of brown, from dark to light tan with a baby camel sitting down that is almost white. All the camels are dromedary camels which means they all have only one hump and are the only kind of camel found in Saudi Arabia.

The other two men are on the right and facing away from the camera so all you see is their back. Both men are sitting on the rug and are wearing the red and white checked ghutra (headscarf(. The man in the upper right is wearing the white thobe and the man in the lower right is wearing a dark jacket. Near the upper middle is a pair of men(s shoes, the man in the suit probably removed before stepping on the carpet.

Branded Camel

The rectangular shaped color photograph has a profile view of a neck and the head of an almost white camel in the foreground. On the camel's neck are branding marks that are almost black. There are 4 straight marks across the neck perhaps 8 inches long and 1 straight mark that crosses and joins the bottom 2 straight marks. There are 2 marks on the camel's face, lower check, that look like upside down Vs. The camel's head is seen against a very bright blue sky and below the sky is the desert and a pile of green hay.

How do you get a newly purchased camel home?

Arab poets have often called the camel 'the ship of the desert'. Arabian camels have several features that make it ideally suited to desert life. Its feet have wide pads with slimly built legs that help it move easily over the desert, can tolerate thirst for long periods, and can eat the tough thorny shrubs in the desert that even sheep and goats pass over.

The camel is a strange animal because they seem to lack the perception that wild animals have for finding its own food. Camel owners will often go with their camels to show them where they can forage for food. Other times, when the camels are reasonably well fed, they are allowed to wander. They may be gone for several days before they return to their owner for water.

Poor Pamela is insulted and abused by everyone at the circus, because they thinks she's dumb, so she runs away, following a train track. That's how she sees a broken train rail, stands on the track to stop an oncoming train, and saves the day. Children will be attracted to the bright colors, sense of action and drama, and expressive faces characteristic of this highly popular autho/artist's work. An excellent book for children of all ages.
