Mecca is captured

When King Ali bin Hussein declared himself Caliph (leader) of all Muslims in 1922 he alienated the majority of the Sunni Muslims. In late 1924 the Ikhwan, Abdul Aziz's shock troops, launched raids into Heshemite territory (now Jordan). In 1925 the holy cities of Mecca and Medina were captured and Abdul Aziz took possession.

The Great Mosque

Mecca is considered the holiest place in the world to Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca and it was this city that formed the focus of much of what he did while he was alive. The Great Mosque which houses the Kaaba and Zamzam Well is located in the city. The Zamzam Well is believed to have been the source of water for Hagar and Ismail when they were abandoned in the desert by Abraham.
